Seven students traveled to Park City, Utah to attend the Sundance Film Festival for one week, as part of a new class.

Seniors Steve Yuen, Kevin Murphy, Ben Friedman, Meghan Graf and Aaron West, along with junior Liz Squire and sophomore Jen Connors, all boarded a plane last Wednesday for their five hour plane ride to Park City. “The whole process was so exciting,” said Squire. “I was so anxious to get there the plane ride seemed to take days.”

Once there the students shared an apartment located right in the center of the festival. “We were so lucky to be staying in such a nice place,” said Yuen. “Although we did not spend much time in our place, it was nice to have our own space when we would get home late at night.”

The students saw films as early as 8:30 a.m. and as late as midnight. On average, they saw about 20 movies through the week. “We would be seeing films all day, and if we did not have a movie at night we would go out on Main Street” explained Squire. “We also were able to go to the opening night party for Sundance”.

The main street of Park City is filled with people during the festival. With bars, restaurants, and stores, it was not unlikely for the students to walk into an actor they just saw in a film. “We were outside a store, and the entire cast of Cedar Rapids was walking into a building for an interview” said Squire. “Everywhere we would go, we would see someone famous”.

With so much to do, the days were packed with star sightings, viewing movies, visiting exhibits and watching popular bands play at the music Café.  Kevin Murphy’s favorite part of the trip was getting to see so many famous people, “We were able to see many of the movie premiers, so we were sitting in the same room as stars such as Demi Moore, Terrence Howard, Liv Tyler and Kevin Spacey.”

The group recommends that students see Cedar Rapids when it comes out in theaters. “It is as funny as the Hangover. I was laughing out loud for the majority of the movie,” said Yuen.

The class was offered in the fall to any students who were interested in film. Taught by Professor Blake Wood the students watched independent films and analyzed them. The class will run again Fall 2011. To find out more contact Blake Wood.

Explainer: How to survive spring break

Everyone knows that Spring break may leave you feeling a little, ahem, well let’s say tired. The thought of going to a tropical place with my friends for seven days is making me think of booking a vacation for after my vacation.

So I’m going to make it easy for you, with my very own how to survive spring break 2011!

Before even thinking about boarding the plane, I want to rip my hair out. The word packing scares me, I have nightmares just thinking about it. Girls and guys, here are some things you need to pack if you want to survive the hot tropical rays.

-SPF, you don’t want to be that burnt lobster on the first night out. Let’s get real it’s not an attractive look for anyone. (Girls, don’t forget that some medications, like birth control increase your sensitivity to the sun.)

-Razors! Girls, who wants to see hairy legs lounging on the beach and guys if you’re trying to impress the ladies, keep the face clean. A little bit of scruff is nice, but who wants to kiss Santa Clause?

-Lip balm, or boys who are embarrassed to call it that, chap-stick. Make sure it has SPF in it, burnt lips are the worst.

-Calling card. If you’re out of the US, you know your parents are going to be worries about you so why not give them a call when you get there so they know you are alive. (Turn off your cell phone to avoid crazy charges.

-Bring some sort of container to put water in, you don’t want to be paying for bottles of water all day. (Drink, drink drink…water that is, it will help you the next morning) Trust me you will be able to party longer if you stay hydrated. Also, pass on the salt on your margarita, do you want to look bloated in your bathing suit and be dehydrated?

Before you leave for your trip, make sure you do some research on where you are going and know the laws. Some places overseas may have different laws then we are use to and you don’t want to spend your vacation in a foreign jail.

Most spring break resorts are all inclusive, but that doesn’t mean you can’t tip the help. While most resorts do specify that tips are included your package, tipping say your bartender will ensure you special treatment.

Money can be tricky, the best advice I can give is to set a budget and do not go over it. Don’t bring a lot of large bills – keep smaller bills (for tipping) and do not flash your money around.

Now I don’t want to sound like your mother, and I am sure everyone has gotten this lecture, but here I go anyways. STICK TOGETHER. You are there to have fun and be with your friends, so do just that.

If you follow these hints, you are sure to have a great vacation. I’ll leave you with a piece of advice that my uncle taught me, beer before liquor-never been sicker.
